Applying For Graduation
Application For Degree Conferral
To be a candidate for graduation (whether or not you choose to walk in the ceremony), students must initiate an application for degree conferral. This application notifies the university of the student’s intent to complete a degree.
Students must fulfill all requirements for the degree in accordance with the regulations of both their program(s) and the university. Failure to meet all graduation requirements by the end of the term in which the student applied to graduate will result in extending the student’s graduation date to the end of the term in which the work or requirement is eventually completed. Failure to complete degree requirements may include but are not limited to the following: incomplete grades in any course, “X” grades in required courses, or no graduation application.
When To Apply For Graduation
A student is responsible for applying to graduate on MySRU and must submit their application by the following deadlines:
- If the student plans to complete all degree requirements by the end of the fall term, applicants must apply for graduation by October 1.
- If the student plans to complete all degree requirements by the end of the winter term, applicants must apply for graduation by October 1.
- If the student plans to complete all degree requirements by the end of the spring term, applicants must apply for graduation by March 1.
- If the student plans to complete all degree requirements by the end of the summer term, applicants must apply for graduation by June 15.
Commencement Ceremony
A commencement ceremony is held in December and May of each year.
- Participation in the December ceremony is limited to those students who will complete their degree requirements in fall or winter. To ensure the student receives ceremony tickets and for their name to be included in the program, the student must apply by October 1.
- Participation in the May ceremony is limited to those students who will complete their degree requirements in spring or summer. To ensure the student receives ceremony tickets and for their name to be included in the program, the student must apply by March 1.
- Participation in any commencement ceremony is limited to degree-seeking students.
When extenuating circumstances warrant, the Associate Provost may grant a student permission to participate in a commencement ceremony.
- Students must initiate their commencement participation request through the Participation in Graduation Ceremony Exception Form. This form is available through Docusign found on the Forms page on the Academic Records & Registration website.
Other Items Graduating Students Need to Know
- Students who simultaneously meet all of the degree requirements for two undergraduate degrees will obtain two degrees.
- The student’s transcript will list both degrees.
- The student will be issued two diplomas, one for each degree earned.
- A student who completes the requirements of more than one concentration within a single degree program (for example, a student pursuing a BFA in Art who completes all of the requirements of concentrations in Ceramics and Painting) has completed a “dual concentration” and has earned a single degree, not two degrees.
- Undergraduate diplomas bear the name of the degree (ex. Bachelor of Science), date of graduation, and Latin honors, if earned. Diplomas do not include majors or minors.
- Graduate diplomas bear the name of the degree (ex. Master of Science) and date of graduation.
