PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES
- The student will be able to reflect on their own cultural identity and how it might impact their teaching. SRU UG 2, 4, 7, 9; SRU G 3
- The student will be able to use current terminology related to culturally sustaining and relevant music education and promote an asset-based perspective about differences. SRU UG 1, 8; SRU G 1, 2
- The student will be able to identify systems of privilege, bias, and oppression in systems impacting education and take steps to create a more equitable environment for all students. SRU UG 2, 5, 7, 9; SRU G 1, 2
- The student will be able to respect, acknowledge, and affirm the diverse identities, histories, cultures, and value systems of their students, including by identifying and avoiding the use of microaggressions. SRU UG 1, 9; SRU G 1, 2, 3
- The student will be able to modify, design, and/or facilitate instructional practices and/or materials so they are culturally relevant, sustaining, and responsive, to help all learners experience success. SRU UG 2; SRU G 1, 2
- The student will be able to modify, design, and/or facilitate practices and/or materials for increased communication with the families and communities of their learners. SRU UG 1; SRU G 1, 2, 3
This program will provide undergraduate students, mainly music majors and minors, with the knowledge and skills to create a more culturally relevant and sustaining classroom for their students through focused study in courses designed to meet the needs of today’s diverse music classrooms.
