Program Learning Outcomes

Communication - Advertising, BS

  • Develop knowledge of the history, concepts and principles of advertising and critically apply these concepts to current advertising issues and challenges.
  • Develop the technical and professional skills required for entry-level positions in advertising. Advertising students will:
    • Incorporate the skills of needs assessment, strategic campaign development, and evaluation for advertising projects and campaigns.
    • Develop multimedia writing skills to effectively produce advertising messages across platforms.
    • Develop professional skills related to resume, portfolio development and interviewing to obtain an entry-level position in the advertising field.
  • Understand the ethical and legal issues facing contemporary advertising professionals. Advertising students will demonstrate knowledge of:
    • Ethical codes applicable to advertising;
    • First Amendment issues, libel, privacy, copyright and other legal and ethical issues relevant to advertising; and
    • Current government regulations affecting the development and distribution of advertising messages.

  • Writing competency: Students will demonstrate the ability to write and present messages clearly and effectively.
  • Context of the field: Students will understand the history, concepts, and principles of the field and critically apply these elements to current issues within the discipline.
  • Career readiness: Students will demonstrate proficiency in message production required for entry-level positions in the field.
  • Ethics and legal issues: Students will understand ethical and legal issues facing communicators in the 21st century.
