MUSI 108 -  Flute Camp  

The SRU "Flute Camp" will give high school flutists an opportunity to be on the SRU campus during the Summer Arts Academy for an intensive 2 week program involving all aspects of flute performance. Follow up involvement of the high school students during the fall semester will consist of their attendance at flute related university events and critical writing about the concerts/rehearsals/master classes they observed during the fall component.

MUSI 109 -  Jazz Combo  

Students will meet weekly with the appropriate faculty member to work on jazz performance in the small group (combo) setting. Study of phrasing, articulation, jazz theory, improvisation, and other jazz performance practices will be addressed. Students will be auditioned at the beginning of the semester for placement. At least one public performance will be given per semester. One hour of rehearsal time per week. MUSI 111 -  Introduction to Music Education  

This course is designed to introduce the student to the field of music education. This course will be an introduction to planning and preparation for teaching music, including creating an effective classroom environment for teaching music, instructional delivery in music, historical background relevant to music education, copyright laws in the music classroom, instructional planning, diversity, and advocacy. Students will complete their Field Experience Level 1: Observation hours as a requirement of this course.

Symphonic Wind Ensemble: A chamber ensemble composed of select musicians chosen by audition, performing contemporary literature as well as transcriptions for winds and percussion. MUSI 115 -  Concert Choir  

Auditioned mixed chorus of 50-70 singers that studies and performs a variety of music from Renaissance to 21st century, classical to contemporary, a cappella and music accompanied by piano, chamber groups, and symphonic ensembles. Three hours per week rehearsal time. Multiple concerts are presented both on and off campus and on periodic tours. One to three credits for every semester of satisfactory participation is granted for this music performance group. The course may be repeated up to 10 times. MUSI 116 -  University Chorus  

University Chorus is a non-auditioned ensemble open to singers from any academic discipline. This ensemble explores the fundamentals of singing and artistry within a collaborative community and through a selection of diverse repertoire. University Chorus has two ensembles that focus on higher voices and lower voices. Each semester, both sections will combine for mixed-voiced instruction on selected repertoire. An elite chamber choir of 16-24 outstanding singers who perform challenging repertoire with a greater emphasis on a cappella music. Members of this group are expected to display initiative to prepare music to the highest possible level of their ability. Two and one-half hours per week rehearsal time. The Marching Pride performs during the half time at football games, both home and away, and for other special events. Much of its music is specially arranged. Open to all students. The SRU Jazz Ensemble performs jazz literature from all eras of jazz history including big band, bop, hard bop, fusion and contemporary. This ensemble often performs with guest artists of national and international stature, both on and off campus. Membership in this ensemble requires an audition. Three hours and forty-five minutes of rehearsal per week. One to three credits for every semester of satisfactory participation is granted for this music performance group. MUSI 128 -  Applied Alexander Technique  

This course is an introduction to the Alexander Technique in which the students will examine their habitual movement patterns in order to encourage positive energy usage within the body. This technique heightens kinesthetic sensitivity, offering performers a control that is fluid and lively, thus lessening chances of performance injury. The principles of this technique are based on an understanding of human anatomy, which promotes ease, and freedom of movement, balance, flexibility, and coordination. Course may be repeated up to two credits.

MUSI 129 -  Guitar, Ukulele, & Bass Methods  

A music education course designed to prepare music education majors to teach guitar, ukulele, string bass, and electric bass in elementary and secondary schools. It will also prepare students with the functional skills to use the guitar and ukulele as accompanying instruments.

MUSI 130 -  Exploring Music  

A survey course designed to develop the student perception and understanding of changing musical styles and practices in Western culture. Studying and experiencing the arts, including dance, music, theatre, and the visual arts, develops creative and aesthetic abilities. The arts introduce students not only to artists and their creations, but also to history, cultures, values, technique, imagination, creativity, and issues relevant to society. Students will gain an understanding of the creative process and how to analyze and interpret message and meaning in works of art. While the arts can bring us pleasure, they can also serve to enlighten and illuminate critical issues, lead to personal discoveries, and foster innovation in all fields. Students will learn to think critically about the arts, develop an appreciation for artistic creations, and by viewing live performances and exhibitions, become engaged audience members. Arts inquiry courses use and develop the analytic and interpretive modes of inquiry needed to understand and explore both tangible and abstract artistic works and the cultures in which they exist. In arts inquiry courses, students confront a variety of cultural and artistic expressions in order to gain an understanding of the human condition, and ultimately express their relationship to artistic work, meaning, and the creative process. Attendance at arts events will be required during this course and may require a fee.

For beginners with no previous keyboard experience. Fundamentals of note reading, beginning piano repertoire, melody harmonization and improvisation. MUSI 139 -  Foundations of Academic Discovery  

Foundations of Academic Discovery serves as the entry point to the Rock Integrated Studies Program. With its strong faculty-student interaction, the course promotes intellectual inquiry, critical and creative thinking, and academic excellence. Through varied content, the course introduces students to academic discourse and information literacy while exploring topics such as diversity and inclusion and global awareness. This course will set students along the path to becoming engaged with issues and scholarship important to a 21st century education while they learn about themselves and their place in the world.

A study of the fundamental concepts and skills needed to play and teach trombone, baritone horn, euphonium, and tuba to homogeneous and heterogeneous instrument groups in pre-K-12 instrumental music education setting. This includes the integration and application of national and state standards for music education.

MUSI 151 -  Music Theory and Musicking I  

Through a popular music “sound before sight” approach, students will learn the foundation of pitches in a diatonic scale; basic rhythms and meters; intervals, major and natural minor solfège––all through informal learning techniques. As the semester progresses, notation and sight-singing will be introduced for a smooth transition into written music theory.

MUSI 193 -  Jazz Lab Band  

The SRU Jazz Lab Band is a rehearsal ensemble that performs one concert per academic semester. The group does require an audition which takes place in the first week of the Fall semester. If openings occur in the Spring semester, the director will hold an audition for the open seats only. The ensemble rehearses big band literature from every stylistic period in jazz history. The focus of the course is on developing sight-reading, jazz performance practice and techniques, stylistic interpretation, foundational ensemble techniques, jazz band rehearsal techniques, and exposure to the literature, history, and composers of jazz music. This is open to all students regardless of major or area of emphasis. One to two credits for every semester of satisfactory participation is granted for this music performance group. MUSI 194 -  World Percussion Ensemble  

The SRU World Percussion Ensemble rehearses and performs the percussion music of cultures outside of Western Europe and the United States, concentrating on, but not exclusive to, the Caribbean (Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, The Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico), Asia (Japan, lndia, and Korea), South America (Brazil), and West Africa. Students learn the instruments, techniques, some choreography (when appropriate), and musical styles in multiple genres for at least one public performance each academic semester. The ensemble rehearses and performs on authentic instruments (whenever possible) or modern, commercially available substitutes. This is open to all students regardless of major or area of emphasis. MUSI 196 -  Winter Guard  

The Slippery Rock University Winter Guard is the indoor color guard performing ensemble. In this performing ensemble, students will combine the use of flags, sabers, mock rifles, and other equipment, as well as dance and interpretive movement, in shows for public performance and competition. Held in the spring semester the group performs in competition as part of the indoor marching arts circuit as well as for campus and community events. The course may be repeated up to 5 times. Designed to prepare music therapy majors in fundamental clinical skills in music therapy necessary for working with a variety of client populations. MUSI 203 -  Musician's Health  

This course is designed for music students, performing arts majors or any student who desires a deeper understanding of musicianship and performing artist wellness. An emphasis on healthy living for the performer including elimination of risk for injury will be discussed. The course will explore concepts such as ergonomics, good posture, and breathing and support. Students will learn about concepts such as effective practicing and the brain's perception of sound. Students will learn to identify and correct problems facing the performer when they arise.

MUSI 204 -  Art and Science of Performing  

This course focuses on how to define, detect, and manage performance anxiety. Students will learn about the body's innate response to stress and pressure situations, and how to recognize maladaptive responses to pressure situations. Students will learn about conventional methods for treating performance anxiety as well as unconventional methods including self-analysis, meditation, guided imagery, and the Alexander technique. Pre-performance routines such as centering will be discussed. Students will learn about tools such as engaged practicing that will help to produce better performances. The concept of flow state will also be discussed.

In this course, students will learn the foundational skills necessary to conduct both instrumental and vocal ensembles. As an introductory course, it will serve as a catalyst for developing the lifelong conductor-practitioner regardless of area emphasis - vocal or instrumental. Fundamental skills that will be developed include, but are not limited to: conducting patterns in stationary focal point conducting, expressive gesture, baton technique and basic transpositions.

University Chorus is a non-auditioned ensemble open to singers from any academic discipline. MUSI 253 -  Music Theory and Analysis II  

This course is a continuation of Music Theory and Musicking I and introduces the fundamentals of melodic and harmonic composition in the diatonic tonal style. Mastery of basic theoretical analytical techniques, Roman numeral analysis, and figured bass composition leads to a study of two-voice counterpoint and its application in four-voice part writing using tonic and dominant harmonies.

This course continues building upon the concepts of harmonic practice and voice-leading from Music Theory and Analysis III; expanding to chromatic chordal evolution and advanced harmonic analysis. Through harmonic analysis, form analysis, and composition, students will apply these methods to representative works from several historical stylistic periods, emphasizing the historical evolution of forms from the Renaissance through the late Romantic and into the present day.

MUSI 293 -  Jazz Lab Band  

The SRU Jazz Lab Band is a rehearsal ensemble that performs one concert per academic semester. The group does require an audition which takes place in the first week of the Fall semester. If openings occur in the Spring semester, the director will hold an audition for the open seats only. The ensemble rehearses big band literature from every stylistic period in jazz history. The focus of the course is on developing sight-reading, jazz performance practice and techniques, stylistic interpretation, foundational ensemble techniques, jazz band rehearsal techniques, and exposure to the literature, history, and composers of jazz music. MUSI 294 -  World Percussion Ensemble  

The SRU World Percussion Ensemble rehearses and performs the percussion music of cultures outside of Western Europe and the United States, concentrating on, but not exclusive to, the Caribbean (Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, The Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico), Asia (Japan, lndia, and Korea), South America (Brazil), and West Africa. Students learn the instruments, techniques, some choreography (when appropriate), and musical styles in multiple genres for at least one public performance each academic semester. The ensemble rehearses and performs on authentic instruments (whenever possible) or modern, commercially available substitutes. This is open to all students regardless of major or area of emphasis. The Slippery Rock University Winter Guard is the indoor color guard performing ensemble. In this performing ensemble, students will combine the use of flags, sabers, mock rifles, and other equipment, as well as dance and interpretive movement, in shows for public performance and competition. Held in the spring semester the group performs in competition as part of the indoor marching arts circuit as well as for campus and community events. The course may be repeated up to 5 times. Explores the musical contributions of women, a group often excluded from studies of music history, from the Middle Ages to the present. There will also be discussion on the role of gender in shaping musical ideology and experiences.

University Chorus is a non-auditioned ensemble open to singers from any academic discipline. MUSI 393 -  Jazz Lab Band  

The SRU Jazz Lab Band is a rehearsal ensemble that performs one concert per academic semester. The group does require an audition which takes place in the first week of the Fall semester. If openings occur in the Spring semester, the director will hold an audition for the open seats only. The ensemble rehearses big band literature from every stylistic period in jazz history. The focus of the course is on developing sight-reading, jazz performance practice and techniques, stylistic interpretation, foundational ensemble techniques, jazz band rehearsal techniques, and exposure to the literature, history, and composers of jazz music. MUSI 394 -  World Percussion Ensemble  

The SRU World Percussion Ensemble rehearses and performs the percussion music of cultures outside of Western Europe and the United States, concentrating on, but not exclusive to, the Caribbean (Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, The Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico), Asia (Japan, lndia, and Korea), South America (Brazil), and West Africa. Students learn the instruments, techniques, some choreography (when appropriate), and musical styles in multiple genres for at least one public performance each academic semester. The ensemble rehearses and performs on authentic instruments (whenever possible) or modern, commercially available substitutes. This is open to all students regardless of major or area of emphasis. The Slippery Rock University Winter Guard is the indoor color guard performing ensemble. In this performing ensemble, students will combine the use of flags, sabers, mock rifles, and other equipment, as well as dance and interpretive movement, in shows for public performance and competition. Held in the spring semester the group performs in competition as part of the indoor marching arts circuit as well as for campus and community events. The course may be repeated up to 5 times. MUSI 407 -  Choral Rehearsal Techniques  

In this course for music education majors, students will analyze and conduct beginning and intermediate musical scores for choir. The student conductor will identify performance errors and learn to use various rehearsal techniques to improve the ensemble's performance. Students will also survey and learn performance practice for choral literature of all historical stylistic periods, and discuss numerous aspects of choral pedagogy, such as designing curriculum for and administrating a choral program.

MUSI 456 -  Social Emotional Learning in Music Education  

This course will explore the unique position of music education in addressing the social emotional learning competencies of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Music, by its very nature, is both social and emotional. In this course, you will learn how to integrate the SEL competencies into music education to create an environment where great teaching enriches the lives of students through the fostering of their SEL skills right alongside their musical development.

MUSI 457 -  Popular Music Pedagogy  

The purpose of this course is to develop student achievement through the exploration of a modern band ensemble. The course will introduce the skills necessary to perform on electric guitar, acoustic guitar, electric bass, keyboard, drums, vocals, and technology. With an emphasis on the music styles of the last 50 years, many of these will be discussed, demonstrated, and performed by the students. The course will also foster peer-to-peer development in the band setting while encouraging each band to perform cohesively as a single unit. Students in Popular Music Pedagogy will also be introduced to the art of composition and improvisation.

MUSI 458 -  Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Wind Band Literature  

This course will focus on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the wind band profession, particularly related to wind band repertoire and equitable programming practices. In this course, students will engage with first-hand accounts from underrepresented communities in the wind band profession contextualized against a brief history of the wind band and its repertoire. Students will identify and analyze historical systems and structures influencing repertoire development. Diverse works by diverse composers at a variety of grade levels will be studied as well as resources to immediately implement equitable programming practices in the classroom today.

This course examines the musical history of popular musics from 1900 to the present including styles such as jazz, blues, country, rock and roll, rhythm & blues, rap, hip-hop, and music of various cultures. An emphasis on understanding the cultural context of the composers and music will be provided throughout this course highlighting social and political influences on popular musics.

Students have an opportunity to study selected areas in greater concentration under the direction of a music faculty. MUSI 493 -  Jazz Lab Band  

The SRU Jazz Lab Band is a rehearsal ensemble that performs one concert per academic semester. The group does require an audition which takes place in the first week of the Fall semester. If openings occur in the Spring semester, the director will hold an audition for the open seats only. The ensemble rehearses big band literature from every stylistic period in jazz history. The focus of the course is on developing sight-reading, jazz performance practice and techniques, stylistic interpretation, foundational ensemble techniques, jazz band rehearsal techniques, and exposure to the literature, history, and composers of jazz music. MUSI 494 -  World Percussion Ensemble  

The SRU World Percussion Ensemble rehearses and performs the percussion music of cultures outside of Western Europe and the United States, concentrating on, but not exclusive to, the Caribbean (Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, The Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico), Asia (Japan, lndia, and Korea), South America (Brazil), and West Africa. Students learn the instruments, techniques, some choreography (when appropriate), and musical styles in multiple genres for at least one public performance each academic semester. The ensemble rehearses and performs on authentic instruments (whenever possible) or modern, commercially available substitutes. This is open to all students regardless of major or area of emphasis. The Slippery Rock University Winter Guard is the indoor color guard performing ensemble. In this performing ensemble, students will combine the use of flags, sabers, mock rifles, and other equipment, as well as dance and interpretive movement, in shows for public performance and competition. Held in the spring semester the group performs in competition as part of the indoor marching arts circuit as well as for campus and community events. The course may be repeated up to 5 times.
